Construction/Carpentry Program

Construction                                                                                       Grade: 9-11             Credits:  2

Year one Construction Core program provides a foundation of knowledge to prepare students for employment or continued education in several occupations related to the construction industry.  Construction introduces students to fundamentals of construction safety, tools, math, blueprint reading, and basic carpentry, electrical, masonry, and plumbing skills.  Students are encouraged to join the student organization, SkillsUSA, which participates in community service projects as well as competitions at the regional, state, and national levels.  To ensure student success the following prerequisites are in place: C or higher in English (the previous year); C or higher in math (last course taken); and instructor approval.  *9th-grade students are accepted on a case-by-case basis with director approval.

 

 

Carpentry                                                                                            Grade: 10-12           Credits:  2

Year two Carpentry program includes an introduction to basic carpentry processes. The purpose of the course is to prepare students to continue studying in a postsecondary construction program (Residential Carpentry) or to begin work at the entry-level in a carpentry occupation. The Carpentry course consists of an in-depth study of basic safety, construction math, materials, wall, ceiling, and roof framing; windows and doors; stairs, and construction essentials. This course should only be taken after students successfully pass Construction Core. Upon completing this course, students will know how to complete the NCCER Level I Certification.  For students to be successful in the program, the following student prerequisites are in place: C or higher in English (the previous year); C or higher in math (last course taken); C or higher in Construction (year 1); 70% or higher on year 1 NCCER exams; instructor and/or director approval.
